Summer Time 2011

I'm really enjoying all my time with Charlie. He is my biggest accomplishment and greatest reward of my life. I love him more and more everyday. I am so proud of Dick for the great husband he has always been and the best father he has become. I'm grateful for the hard work that he does so that I'm able to stay home and raise our child. These boys are my loves! I'm really finding that once you take time (once you get the time to) slow down and enjoy the little things in life..those are the ones you will make memories with and cherish. Just yesterday, we (finally!!) got some rain. I ran outside with Charlie and he giggled as the cold and wet raindrops fell on his head. It was the sweetest thing. I realized it was the first time he had ever felt the rain. I love watching him play with toys, flip them over, turn them upside down, pull on them, pick them up and drop them and just discover new things. Here are a few pics of him watching Daddy mow the grass for the first time. I thought the loud noise of the lawn mower, blower and weed eater would scare him, but he just giggled away. I am getting more ADHD as I age. Or maybe it's that and a combination of being a SAHM that makes me crave home projects. Charlie takes two naps a day for 2 hours & I suppose while he is on such a great schedule I feel the need to accomplish things I've been wanting to tackle while I can. Today I am repainting charlie's book shelf, choosing kitchen paint color & rearranging furniture. We painted out kitchen once and I am not onto the color anymore. I'm hosting another party tomorrow so in between all that im making my sausage cheese balls at some point. You'd think after a week of playing and swimming in Oxford, id be dead tired, but I just can't lay around. Sunday, we are having the dads over for a father's day dinner so I've committed myself to finishing the kitchen before that. Wish me luck!

I just downloaded a free blogging app so i can update mine using my phone. It won't let me upload pics, does anyone have another app they recommend? Otherwise, it's hard to make time for it. I'm too busy cleaning house & chasing charlie! Ha.

I hate the title of this post...but ..it is what it is!!

Dick told me that he heard through the grapevine that he's supposed to buy a gift once the baby is born. I did not argue. Chalon was in town one weekend and we casually bracelet shopped. I picked out a David Yurman bracelet and even though I had the jeweler write down the bracelet info on a card for dick, i truly never thought twice about it. I also forgot about it and never gave dick the card. Fast forward two weeks after Charlie was born and Dick walked in with a gift. To my surprise, he bought it! Aside from my wedding ring, I've never owned anything so nice. It's so special because it has Charlie's birthstone on it. He did good considering he had no help. Great job honey!

One Month Picture

We've made it a month and beyond! Yes, I said "we". Charlie wouldn't be growing and thriving if it weren't for his parents caring for him-ha! We are doing great. Charlie is such a great baby and he makes us feel like we are doing something right and its boosting our confidence as parents. Again, I give him all the credit. He is a good sleeper and eater. I couldn't ask for a happier baby.

Our dogs have been very curious about Charlie the first few days he was home. Now, they are indifferent about him. Although I did put Charlie in his bassinet so I could shower real quick one day last week. He started crying and I quickly tried to finish things up in the shower. While I was still in the shower, my smallest dog, Mosely, ran into the bathroom and started wimpering. Guess the baby's cry stressed him out. It was real sweet.

Fortunately, Dick's work has been going excellent. Once the middle of the month hit, Dick was already near 400 percent of his quota. It's definately allowed him to be more flexible and help me out more during the week this month. Not to mention the compensation he will get will come in handy with hospital bills!

Well my new favorite show, Modern Family, is on...gotta go! I'll leave you with Charlie's one month picture.. Too cute!

Tuesday, August 31st at 4:00pm weighing 6lbs 10 ounces at 19 1/4 inches sweet Charlie made his entrance into this world! We are smitten with our beautiful blessing!! My life is forever changed and I couldn't be happier :)

August 30th is the day!

Today, I had a sweet friend treat me to lunch and pay me a visit! I was so happy to have the company and catch up with her. While we were hanging out, I got an unexpected call from the doctor's office. It was my nurse and doctor calling to tell me the new plan. Tomorrow's weekly appt was cancelled. I'll have a sonogram Thursday to monitor the baby. I will go back next Monday and Thursday for 2 more sonograms. They watch him kick me to check for muscle development, they monitor his heart, measure him (head, feet, etc), get an approximate weight and we watch his little mouth move and practice breathing on his own. Then I'm off to triage for blood pressure and weight check. The following Monday, August 30th, I'll be induced!! At that point, I'll be 38 weeks 1 day. Sounds good to me!! Dick and i are excited! When I think of everything we have been through to arrive at this moment, the birth of our son, it gets me very emotional. Words cannot describe!!! Have a great week everyone!

36 weeks and counting!

Well folks, school started back for teachers Aug 2nd. I had a great (hot) week tying up loose ends,catching up with teachers and sitting through meetings. Thursday, we had open house and I got to meet a lot of my kids and parents. The following Monday, school started for kids. I was at school all Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until 11. Wednesday afternoon, I had my weekly checkup at the doctor. It was not a good day. My blood pressure was elevated again, my weight was up and I had an ongoing complaint of swelling, blurred vision and pains in my ankles and fingers joints. As a precautionary method, I was tested for preeclampsia. A condition, while only diagnosed in about 5-8 percent of patients (lovely odds huh) is basically hypertension and has all the symptoms I've been having. The blood test was negative but until the 2nd test was negative, I was put on bed rest for the remainder of the week. Friday, my nurse called and told me bed rest until Charlie arrives is the plan. I failed my 2nd test. I am to monitor my blood pressure, double my water intake and stay off my feet! I was really upset Wednesday when I got all this news but fortunately It allowed me to prepare for this possibility. Bed rest to most would probably sound like a dream..a chance to rest up before baby arrives! Yet, the beginning of the year is probably the busiest for a school teacher. But, it is what it is. I wish someone out there would tell me what I should be doing. I did have all summer to prepare for his arrival. I've had all my baby showers, his clothes are clean, his room is ready, our bags are packed...so I really can't think of what else i should be doing. Sister told me to change bed sheets and air filters..I did that too! I even added "clean the fridge" to my list and completed that. I am not big on cooking and preparing meals ahead of time to freeze. Anything I make doesn't take long. Dick and I both cook so we could share that duty. Somehow we will get fed. My sister did tell me she made chicken spaghetti for us! Maybe I just know I'm in good hands so I don't have to worry. Anyways, my checkup yesterday was great. Charlie had a great appointment. His weight is on target (meaning he is gaing the half pound a week that he needs to so I'm not depriving him of anything with this condition), his test for general well being was really good (he scored a 8 out of 8), my blood pressure was low and since I doubled my water intake, I had lost 3 pounds of that pesky water retention and I have ankles that aren't swollen and vision that isn't blurred. Bed rest is good to us both. Just taking things a day at a time. Whew! this is a novel! I suppose when you have the time, it's easy to write a lot. hee hee. I found a lady who makes these and I asked her to do one for me. I sent her my bedding and told her this was really the only focal point. The rest of my nursery is plain. The bedding and furniture are white..the walls are neutral, the window treatment is also neutral and we have a yellow glider. I think she did a really good job. I am very pleased. The plaque in the middle will be filled out with all his stats. The picture really doesn't do it justice. It's so cool.

It's been a while..

since my last post. Today, I'm 35 weeks pregnant. Tomorrow, school starts back. 4 weeks from today, baby Charlie will have (hopefully) made his way into this world! The doctor said we'd induce Labor Day weekend...oh the irony of this holiday!
I'm getting ahead of myself though... Since I last posted, I have had 3 baby showers. Dick's aunts hosted a shower for me July 17th weekend, the last weekend in July my friends gave me a shower and the first weekend in August, my coworkers gave me a shower. Needless to say, July has been a very fun, busy and productive month! I've managed to finish all my thank you letters and dreft everything in preparation for his arrival. When my sister came to town for the Jackson baby shower, she brought me a bassinett, swing and stroller. When I say Charlie is set, I mean it! Everyone has been so generous in helping us prepare for him. Pictures posted are from variety of showers passed to me. I was not good about remembering to take pictures..usually I am but that's ok. Thank goodness my family and friends (once again) pulled through for me!

Happy 4th of July everyone! We had a relaxing day with family and friends at Lake Caroline. We had dinner at a friend's house and then watched fireworks on a picnic blanket by the lake with family. I am not good about remembering to take pictures. I did get a picture of Dick and his flag shorts. They were awesome.

The fourth also marks 30 weeks for me. Tomorrow, Dick and I will be spending some time in my classroom getting organized. I can't believe it's already time to start thinking about it. Teachers go back in about a month. I don't know what these next few weeks will entail in terms of my mobility, strength and stamina...so I'm going to get this room ready now. Hope everyone has a safe, happy holiday weekend!!

Oxford Shower

Charlie and I had our first baby shower in Oxford last weekend. It was really sweet of my friends to make the trip. I received so many great things and I am happy to have lots of experienced moms out there to provide me with what I need. And just so you know, I'll be reaching out to you all for advice a lot I'm sure.
I'm almost 30 weeks and I cannot believe that Charlie will make his debut within that time. (hopefully, exceeding my due date doesn't sound like fun) I LOVE being pregnant. It's everything I hoped and prayed for. That being said, I want to share him with everyone so I don't want to be pregnant forever :)

Orange Beach 2010

This year, I only planned one beach trip. My family and I went to Orange Beach for a few days for R&R. We had a great time. It's always busy with 3 kids in the mix but we enjoyed their company. We did not spend much time on the beach for obvious reasons but as you can see, at a glance, they still look really pretty. Unfortunately, double red flags, tar balls, and volunteers cleaning up the beaches in tractors made it a difference experience.

We stayed @ the Caribe. It was full of great pools and even a lazy river! Here are a few pics of from our trip.

Trip to Oxford

Sunday, I went to Oxford to see my family. It was so great hanging out with everyone. Sunday, we went to Taylor Grocery. Monday, Jackson had a baseball game. We had so much fun cheering him on. Tuesday, my sister loaded me up with TONS of baby stuff. I was overjoyed and beyond thankful for all that she gave me. Everything in the nursery is coming together great. We managed to get the crib set up and the bedding. Of course, everything has to be washed but I had to see the final product. I have 4 crates of baby clothes to wash so I'll keep the baby bedding on as long as I can.
My sister came back to Jackson with me yesterday. We had so much fun unpacking and organizing last night. My mom came over as soon as she could to see the progress. Today, Amy and I had SO much luck gathering last minute items.. a lamp, bedding for full bed in nursery, baskets for organizing and selecting a changing table. I was once again fortunate for her taking time out of her full time mom schedule to help me. I would imagine it's hard to get away when your a mom of 3 and everyone depends on you. I felt really good when she left today about all of our accomplishments. So much so, that we both celebrated with a pedi before she had to leave.
Now I've got much to keep me busy. I like being busy if it means I'm closer to getting ready for this baby. Let the nesting begin! We leave for the beach Saturday so I've got plenty to do beforehand. I'll leave you with a picture of the crib.

Even though summer just began, it's already off to a great start. I've done a whole-lotta-nothing! I have spent it lounging in my pj's, taking naps, doing laundry, sleeping late (until 7 but that beats 5:30am) and trying to keep up my daily regimen of walking on the tredmill. So far so good!
Dick had to go out of town for work yesterday. So today, I ventured out to the pool. Charlie is moving up a storm in my belly. It is so neat. I've attached a self portrait poolside.
I've enjoyed my laziness while it lasts. Next week, I'm going to Oxford for a few days. Jackson started playing baseball and I love sitting on a ball field so I've committed to two games next week. Following my trip to Oxford, I will head to the beach for several days. I'm really looking forward to that. Somewhere in between and after, I have an entire list of To-do's we need to tackle. I will pick up a crib from my sister's house along with clothes and whatever else she wants to give me. I'm very lucky to be getting so much from here. At the end of June, I'll have my first baby shower with my friends in Oxford. It will be so fun and I'm really looking forward to that.
I just reread this email and it was all over the place. That's pretty much how my brain works these days. I'll walk into a room and forget while I'm there. Oh well. Happy Summer Everyone!!

Happy 6 months!

I've been so blessed to have such an easy pregnancy experience so far. And by easy I mean that both baby and mom are healthy! There are certainly things you have to learn along the way as you grow. For instance, I have to think about how I will get out of bed, off the couch, out of a chair, tie my shoes or pick something up off the floor. There has to be a process to this. The funniest is getting out of my bathtub. We have a big, deep tub and getting out is a process. I have a coworker who told me a story about how she literally couldn't get out of the tub and had to wait for her husband to get home...i refuse! I realize that at some point I may not have a choice, but where there's a will there's a way! The other day at school my tennis shoes came untied. We were dismissing our students to the buses so there were tons of teachers around. I looked at my feet and I guess you could tell I was in deep thought about how this would go down without squishing Charlie but a teacher ran over and said "Let me do it" And I stood there half embarrassed but mostly tickled as I stood there waiting while she tied my shoes and added the double knot to both my sneakers to avoid this happening again. Here are pics of me @ 24 weeks. I am embracing the belly!!
School is basically out. We have a 60% day for students Monday. Out of my 21 kids, about 9 said they would be @ school. Some of them were saying their goodbyes Friday. One said, "it will be weird not seeing you pregnant" ha!
I can't wait to lounge by the pool all day this summer. We leave for the beach in about 3 weeks and Im ready!

California Raisins come to town!

This week we have state testing. It's kind of a big deal around here. We decided to dress up and motivate our kids to do well. It couldn't hurt right? At this point we were willing to do anything to lighten the mood. Even if it means wearing a raisin costume complete with a sign on our backs that say "Raisin' Test Scores"
We got mixed reviews from the kids. Most thought it was funny, some were embarrassed...go figure! Afterall, these are 6th graders. You never know what you're gonna get! Mother's Day weekend in NOLA

22 weeks pregnant

I just love this time of year. It's my first Mother's Day, my birthday is just 2 days away and schools nearly out for summer!! I couldn't be happier.

This weekend my sister and I surprised my mom with an overnight trip to New Orleans. Saturday night we checked into the Windsor Court and headed to dinner @ Bacco. The hotel was beautiful and the food was delicious. After dinner, we headed to Jack's Brewery to hit up the candy store for pralines. My dad had a special request for them.However, the store was closed but we had better luck @ our hotel. My brother works at the hotel and he hooked us up with some.
The next day, we had brunch @ the hotel. It was very fancy. I enjoyed hanging with my mom, sister and brother. The moments are few and far between, but always treasured!!! Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!!

Atlanta Trip

21 weeks pregnant

The first weekend in May, I went to Atlanta for Gleatie's shower. My college friends have always been really good about getting together but especially good about gathering for baby showers. The group varies but there is always someone there to represent. Here is the only picture I have (thanks to Chalon!) of our group. Gleatie got a bunch of great stuff and it makes me excited for my showers this summer!

It's fun having friends who have pregnancies right along with you. Just off the top of my head, I know 3 friends that are due within weeks or even days ahead of me and they are all having boys! That doesn't even count 4 friends who have already had boys within the year! There is certainly a lot to learn and I'm just happy that I have been blesssed with the miracle of being a mom!!

Baby Bedding as arrived!!

I've finally decided on baby bedding.I knew I'd pick something gender neutral so I wasn't going to wait to find out. When I found what I had in mind all along, I just bought it. It is perfect and best of all, it was all delivered fast! I ordered on a Monday or Tuesday night and Friday morning it was here. I cannot wait to start getting Charlie's room ready this summer.

Busy March

March has proven to be a busy but fun month for us! While out for Spring break, Dick and I drove to Kentucky to see old friends and celebrate Tate's 30th birthday and Nelly's baby shower. The birthday party theme was 80's. That would explain all the denim!

We came home Sunday and Monday morning I left for Gulf Shores with friends/co workers. It was beautiful!

The next weekend, I was in one of my best friend's weddings from high school. Christy was married in Hammond, LA. I have no pictures but the bride was beautiful!!

This past weekend, we went to an engagement party. It was great seeing old friends!

Really?

Today is one of those days when I just have to look around and say to myself "REALLY!!"

I woke up this morning to find my dogs paw prints all over my bedding. We've had either nonstop rain or snow so my yard is marsh. The dogs have the freedom to go in and out of the doggy door and it's not entirely their fault they have muddy paws. So instead of getting angry, I bathed both of the dogs and started washing muddy towels and sheets. I clean the kichen, start the dishwasher and come back to the bedroom to watch some TV. About 30 minutes later, I hear a beeping noise coming from the washing machine. I open the laundry room door and low and behold I find an overload of liquid detergent spilling out of the wash and tumbling onto the floor. Awesome!!! Let it be known, that this picture was the first time it overflowed. I took the picture, trying to find the humor in all this, cleaned it up and turned around to find it starting all over again. Sheesh!!

The best news of all!

Finally the best news we have is that Dick and I are expecting our first baby in September!! We are overjoyed at the thought of being parents. I can't wait to meet this sweet baby. A few weeks ago, we heard the heartbeat and it melted my heart. I've been feeling great. I am tired all the time but am glad to know that this shall pass. It's great having friends and family who can help me and answer all my questions. I would imagine I have a lot to learn!!! I'm 10 weeks Sunday and I looked forward to the 2nd trimester.

Snow Day/Valentines

This has been a great Valentines Day weekend!! Friday we awoke to several inches of snow. It was nice to sleep in and hang out with my dogs and my husband. Later that day, I received a delivery of 2 dozen roses and chocolate. It was very sweet and thoughtful. Friday night, we had dinner at an Italian restaurant. Today (Saturday) he went with me to see the movie Valentine's Day and tonight we are going to have dinner with friends. Did I mention that Monday is a holiday for us too? Yay for a 4 day weekend!!!

Cotton Bowl

Also in December, we headed to the Cotton Bowl to watch the Rebels play and win at the NEW Cowboy's Stadium. It was so much fun and the stadium was super nice. It was great seeing lots of old college buddies too!

Work, work and more work are all that's been going on with me. Most days, I muster up enough energy to stay awake until 9 to watch my shows...but most of the time, I'm just too tired. I'd better break this wondeful habit this weekend because we are heading to LAS VEGAS Sat...woo woo!!!

After the game, we drove back to Oxford just in time to shower for her wedding. The sun finally came out in town for her ceremony. Just yesterday, I was at my friend Ashley's house hanging out. Early this morning her water broke and at 6:05 Pate Alan was born and sister Massa Elizabeth came 2 minutes later. Pate weighs 5lbs 12oz and Massa 5lbs. Mom & babies are doing great!

This past weekend, I went to Houston to see my good friend Lindsay..aka Lewie! We had so much fun! I have a couple of pictures from our weekend which I'll post later.

This weekend starts football season and I'm so so so excited!!! Unfortunately, I will go to my first game in Starkville. But I'll cheer on the Rebs when they play Memphis...Beat those Tigers!!!
Looking forward to a 3day weekend.

Last weekend, Dick & I drove to Atlanta for Jake (my cousin's son) baptism. It was the first time we had met the little guy. He was just as laid back and sweet as his parents. We had a great time. Isn't he adorable? He is the happiest thing too!!

the biggest project of my summer

Little did I know that when I decided to paint, it would be a long and expensive project. Thank god I'm happy with the outcome. The baby blue and green are "before" classroom pictures. The after is the lime green. I really need to take pictures of my room since the project is finished but just in this "after" shot you can really see the difference! It was really a project because what I thought would take a couple of cans of paint and a couple of days turned into 4 cans of paint, 4 days 5 hours a day. At least I'm happy!

While on our anniversary trip, I couldn't resist snapping a picture (or two) of this dad. He is swimming with his kids (normal) but if you will look closely, his crack is hanging out of his swim trunks. Everytime this big boy got out of the water (which was frequently) it would expose his behind! It was so nasty that we almost moved. Secondly, while swimming with his kids, he had a cigarette in his hand. Really? REALLY!! Do you have to have that cigarette while in the pool. We just watched him as he ashed in the pool. Really, this guy has no self respect or manners! I have a picture of him smoking & then exiting the pool.

2nd year wedding anniversary

We spent our 2nd anniversary on the Gulf Coast. It's a special place to us because we have so many fond memories living there. Friday night, we went to Dick's favorite mexican restaurant in D'Iberville. He really loves those big beers! Saturday, we spent all afternoon @ the Hard Rock pool. It was so relaxing just reading by the pool and soaking in the rays. That night, we had dinner @ Ruth Chris. It was a wonderful weekend.

This weekend Dick and I are going to celebrate our 2nd anniversary on the coast.
I am excited to see old friends, hang out with Dick by the pool at the Hard Rock and just enjoy being with each other. I cannot believe it's almost been 2 years. I love you more everyday Dick!

Weight Watchers

Today was my first (sucessful mind you!) day of doing weight watchers again. I should use the phrase "again" lightly because I did the program while I lived in Washington, DC for about 2 weeks. I bought this entire packet of information that contains easy point system guide to use while grocery shopping and a dining out companion for eating out. I went to a meeting with my roommate and we were weighed in. You come back the next week and they mark your progress. I kept my "score card" and within that week, I had GAINED a 1.8 pounds. That was all it took to make me toss all the info in the closet. I suppose since it's followed me back to my home in Flowood, I ought to give it another try! Like I said, I made it through today and it was easy! I didn't even reach my point value. I asked Dick if he thought they were like roll over minutes. If I don't use them all up one day, does that mean I can tack them onto the next day. Makes sense right?
In addition to this, Dick and I have given up sweets, carbonated drinks and fried foods(I added beer to this, Dick did not). Hopefully between this and weight watchers, I will get into shape. Wish me luck!

As everyone knows, I love my dog! I find it essential not only to recognize her birthday but throw her a party as well. It's a great excuse to have the family over, grill out and make cupcakes (just throwing that last one out there! ha) Augusta went to Party City with us and helped me pick out party hats and favors. She was a great helper!

I've really enjoyed my summer so far! This weekend we are heading back to the beach! I am so excited. Dick hasn't been to the beach yet. We are going to Orange Beach with 2 other couple friends. After I get back, my neice and nephew are coming for an extended weekend stay. Somewhere after and in between, I need to start getting ready for school. I have a lot of work to do. I promised myself I wasn't going to worry about work during the month of June. Today's July 1st so it's time to start planning!

I had lunch with all the 4th grade teachers today. It was good seeing everyone. Debbie & Lynda joined too. They used to teach 4th so they are always apart of the 4th grade team. I am very excited and nervous about teaching 6th. I know I'll enjoy the kids I just like to be well versed in what I'm teaching. I also want my room to be somewhat organized. Seeing as how I don't have a lick of 6th grade stuff, I've got my work cut out for me. Gah! I'm rambling--that's what I do when I'm stressed!!

10 Year High School Reunion

This weekend we had our reunion. Friday night, we gathered at Julep. Saturday, everyone met at the school in the afternoon for a family ice cream social in the library followed by our class picture. Later that night, we had a party at the Yacht club. I forgot my camera Saturday night so no pictures from then-shoot! Hopefully someone will email some to me. It was great seeing everyone and there was a huge turnout!

1. Fruit!!! (fresh or dried) banana, pear, peach, plum,grapes,..whatev, dig in..full in nutrition!!
2. water :) throw a crystal light packet into a water bottle and voila...hunger is a distant memory
3. Kroger brand (or any) granola bar...full of carbs? yes! but good ones!!! I like the sweet and salty ones..they have nuts and dried fruit
4. hummus & red pepper strips --thanks mom for this one!!!
5. popsicle..I like otter pops b/c most of the time I'm not really hungry, just bored and it gives me something to do (is that sad? Does anyone else eat out of boredom)
6. lettuce sandwich..1 loaf of bread and loads of fresh lettuce, spicey mustard and wammo you have a crunchy low fat treat!
7. yogurt with granola....not just any..I've only found them at Walmart..they are yogurt with a serving of granola attached to it. Yogurt is good for you anyways, might as well make it part of your snack.
8. salsa and baked chips (in moderation bc of sodium intake but then again it should be in moderation only..hence "snack") as everyone knows, salsa is fat free and the baked chips are low-fat so enjoy.
9. almonds lots of energy & good for ya!
10. 100 calorie pack anything!! ya know those individually wrapped treats? they portion for you so you don't even have to worry about it.

Not in any particular order!

1. Keifer's
The pita moz with feta (pita bread, melted mozeralla and yummy dipping feta sauce!), fries & pitchers of beer are the best! Not to mention the environment. They have lots of outdoor seating with plenty of shade for anytime of year!

2. Buffalo Wild Wings
This is Dick's favorite hangout. Even so, their food is really good. I don't eat meat on the bone so their boneless wings are perfect for me! They have a variety of beer (it does seem as though these choices are revolving around beer doesn't it?, games to play and TV's all around you constantly showing any sporting event from football to baseball to wrestling!

3. Corner Bakery
The best lunch or breakfast place by far! I loved this place in DC and finally they opened one near my house. For breakfast I once had the ultimate omelet...avocado, tomato, peppers, egg whites, cheddar cheese and salsa...yum yum!!! For lunch you can choose from a variety of sandwiches on their fresh bread or their delish soups and salads!!!

4. Cherokee
If this place ever comes to mind, go on Saturday! Their red beans and rice special with jalepeno cornbread is soo good!!! They have great burgers & fried pickles too.

5. Bonsai
I love sushi and hibachi. This restaurant is known for having the best of both worlds. They have a wide variety of special rolls and they never disappoint. We most often eat sushi there because come 6pm on any given day, the wait for hibachi is always a long one.

6. Amerigo's
If you're craving Italian, you must go here! I don't think I've ever had anything at this place I didn't like. You can never go wrong with the spaghetti and meatball dish.If you're really hungry start with their cheese balls. Fried goodness I tell ya!!! They have the best caesar salad I've ever tasted too!!

7.Shapley's
If you ever go here, don't do what I did and order the tuna steak when beef steak is their speciality! Dick will never let me live that one down! hahaha The sides are served family style so it's more than enough to share...the creamed spinach and potatoes au gratin are to die for!!!

8.Cock Of the Walk
On the rez sits a yummy fried plate...catfish, fries, hushpuppies...yummy!!! If you aren't a fish person, they even have chicken tenders. Don't ask if it can be grilled because the anwswer is no. It's def a guilty pleasure favorite!

9. El Charro
There aren't that many good mexican restaurants left in Jackson. This makes me sad because I do love mexican (who is proud of me for not writing Taco Bell was one of my fav restuarants :) ..but El Charro is the best! Reminds me of college days..best for eating quickly and on a budget :)

10.Hickory Pit
BBQ is another one of those places that are hard to come by in Jackson (weird bc the south is known for great BBQ)..anyways..among the ones left open...this has the best pulled pork sandwiches and potato salad. Best of all, if you don't have time to dine in, just drive your car around the building, pull up to the window and place your order!!

I am so excited that school is almost out. In addition to tie dying shirts, extra recess, movie marathons and cleaning (cleaning, cleaning!!)...the awesome 4th grade teachers decided to rotate all the classes and come up with something fun to do in each of our rooms. In my room, the children made beaded bracelets and necklaces. Other teacher's rooms' included a dancing room, movie and popcorn, carnival games, coloring, painting, face painting and board games..WHEW!!!! It was exhausting!! We all agreed that next year we'd have to plan a little break and some down time spent outside!!

My sister and the kids came to town for a few days. I brought Jackson and Augusta to school with me and I couldn't resist snapping a few pictures of them loving every second of it.

Also-- I felt bad leaving Ellie's picture out of this post. So I also attached a picture of Ellie, Jackson, and I at my dad's house the other night. Again, not anywhere related to this post but I just wanted to include her!!! If I'm teaching by the time she's Jackson and Augusta's age, (Lord help me), then she can come to school with me one day too!

EA Active for the Wii

Dick and I ordered it and it's supposed to be similar to, but more intense than, Wii fit. It's like having a personal trainer in your home. I'm so sore!!

Tie Dye

Seeing as how the MCT is over and we still have another week of school, I decided to become brave and buy a tie dye kit. The kids loved it and I think it turned out great! It actually turned out to be easier than I expected because we started this on our award's day Tuesday. After Award's day, many of the children check out and therefore I only about about half the class left. It was much easier to tie dye shirts with 10 kids one day and finish the other half day!

ACE that Test!

Tomorrow (May 12th) begins MCT2 week! I cannot believe the time has come. Ready or not here we go!!!

The 4th grade teachers decided to pump up the kids and dress up. Among the many thoughts that I have late at night, being an "ace" was one of them. Here I am in the card costume with a sign saying "Ace the MCT!". The kids loved it! I kind of did too :)

Our Anniversary

I'm beside myself!!! Our 2-year anniversary isn't until July but we are planning a trip to NYC. Dick has never been. I love it! As cheesy as it sounds, I feel so alive in the Big Apple!! There's just so much to do and see. I guess if we don't get to do it all we will just have to go again! (darn!) Ha- I haven't even gone yet and I'm already suggested we will need two trips...getting WAY ahead of myself.

We want to go to a Yankee's game, and I've requested tickets to Letterman as well as Regis & Kelly. I am dying to see a broadway show. I've been told Wicked is a good one.

Moore's Greenhouse

Moore's Greenhouse in Madison off Hwy 51 has the biggest selection and best prices for flowers. I scored these and put them on both sides of my front door. It needed some sprucing. Best of all, these are low maintenance so I've managed not to kill them. ..yet..trying to have a green thumb! (I'm pretty sure having a green thumb is more about planting and maintaining a garden, not just remembering to water plants so they don't die) Taking small steps people!

Teacher Appreciation Week

This past week, we had teacher appreciation. The PTO at Richland Upper did a great job of showing their appreciation for us. We had breakfast from Sonic one day, Primos cakes, McAlister's, Mazzio's and door prizes throughout the week! On Friday, we even had a 'duty free' lunch (lunch without kids and not in the cafeteria)

Some teachers weren't happy when students did not recognize this week and show their appreciation. ( I won't name names, but you know who you are!) And I understand that. It doesn't take much and honestly we (teachers) are always buying things for our children. Whether its supplies, goodie bags, parties...it does add up and let's face it, we are just teachers, not doctors! However, I also recognize that we are a Title School which means over half of our kids receive free or reduced lunch. These kids don't have a lot to give and it may be asking a lot for a gift. That being said, I had a student say to me "Mrs. Dickinson, you're my favorite teacher. Your so nice and I like school this year! I didn't like math and now I love it" What a well rounded compliment. I'm nice and I've managed to help you like school and learn something!

I'll take it! It makes all the crazy moments worth it.

Best Husband Ever!

I have to say that before I begin my story that I initially wrote the title of this post as "Best Boyfriend Ever!" whoops. You'd think I'd have the title down pat by now.

ANYWAYS, yes it's true! While I am clearly biased on this one, I think I am right! I have the best husband ever! Friday night I came home to a letter on the counter that reads:

Susan's Birthday
1. The house is clean.
2. Your plants are watered.
3. The lawn will be cut on Saturday. (and he is actually doing that one now!)
4. 'The Soup' has been recorded. (I always forget to record my fav show on Friday nights that I never manage to stay awake for)
5. The back porch is clean.
6. The bed is made.
7. Dinner will be your choice of steak, tuna, or seasame tuna with asparagus and mac and cheese
8. There is a surprise in the fridge
9. No the surprise isn't beer but there is some in there as well. (It ended up being one oversized choc cupcake with choc frosting)
10. You have to stay awake past 9 on Friday (ha ha)

How thoughtful is he? I was amazed. It was so nice to be able to just hang out and know everything was taken care of chore wise.
Dick and I are often reminded of the same concept day to day...to relax and stop trying to worry about is to come or not come in the future..God has a plan for you...give thanks and count your blessings as they come... I am so blessed to have the most amazing husband and friend. He's the best thing in the world and I hope that my love and appreciation for him doesn't go unnoticed or unmentioned!

What's on my Netflix list?

Dick and I have decided to attend the 11:05 church service today. A decision we are both regretting because we've been up since 7...I don't know why either of us thought of going to the earlier service. Anywhoo, to pass the time, I'm doing laundry, exercise TV(their AB class is great!) and now I'm adding movies to my netflix list. Does anyone netflix? I love it. The best part about it is there are no late fees. You can keep the movie as long as you want it. I rarely have time during the week to watch a movie so it's nice to have a movie waiting on me any given weekend day to watch. Here's what I've watched this weekend: Bridal Wars and High School Musical 3. Both great movies!!! I highly reccomend them. Ok, brace yourself, here's what in store for me next week: 'Who's your Caddy?' and 'Marley and Me'.

My dad is always watching the most random movies. 'Who's your Caddy?' came reccommended from my dad. I will say, I've seen part of it on TV and it's a riot. I could always use a good laugh, so I look forward to that one!! I am pretty sure the other movie(Marley and Me) will make me cry. People have already ruined the ending for me!

Ketchup

This is such a random post but it's fitting that it's on my blog. I love ketchup. I put it on practically everything. I was amused when I found this article on ketchup. Hilarious!

Whether you enjoy ketchup with fries or -- like some Americans -- a few fries with a boatload of ketchup, there's no denying the ubiquity and popularity of the distinctive red condiment. Ketchup has been satirized, politicized (W Ketchup anyone?) and considered for reclassification as a vegetable. Many folks can't even agree how it should be spelled (catsup or catchup perhaps?).

We're guessing we're not the only ones who squirrel away unused packets of ketchup in desks and cabinets after a quick meal on the go. (Or who have aging, half-empty bottles of the stuff crammed in the back of the fridge.) And since we hate to waste things here at The Daily Green, we got to thinking about ways to creatively reuse extra ketchup -- we mean besides the obvious choices of making recession ketchup "pizza" or "spaghetti." Shudder...

By the way, wonder what's in ketchup? Typically tomato concentrate (duh), the ubiquitous corn syrup or another sweetener, vinegar, salt, spice and herb extracts (including celery), spice and garlic powder. Some brands also include allspice, cloves, cinnamon, onion and other vegetables.

While none of us should be eating too much salt or corn syrup, it's hard to argue with the fact that the ingredients list is decidedly non-toxic, especially when you compare it to the chemical-laded conventional cleaning products and shampoos that it can replace.

So check out these great alternative uses for ketchup, which will save you money and time:

Shine your copper

Whether you have copper-bottomed cooking pans, architectural detailing, or shiny knick-knacks, forget mucking about with costly and potentially toxic metal polish pastes. Why not use some of those old ketchup packets stashed away in your kitchen drawers?

Here's a very simple recipe from Michael de Jong, TDG's Zen Cleaner and author of the Clean series of simple living books:

Massage ketchup over the copper and watch it dissolve the tarnish away (thanks to the acid). In the event that you have stubborn spots, add a pinch of table salt while you polish.

Get those auto parts gleaming

According to The Cymbal Book by Hugo Pinksterboer, some folks have seen decent results getting their cars to shine by rubbing with ketchup. The book notes that the condiment does a good job cutting tarnish, but not so well in removing dirt. Sounds like you may need a multi-step process, with some soap and water as well.

Fight Skunk Odors

If you've lived in a rural or even suburban part of North America, chances are you may have had a run-in with a skunk one night or evening. Or perhaps your dog has. Although some experts have cautioned that the technique may not actually work well (beyond a masking sensation), many people still swear by tomato juice as a way to remove potent skunk odor. Michael de Jong points out that in the event you don't have any tomato juice on hand you can try using plain ketchup instead.

Get back prettier hair from chlorine damage

According to de Jong, ketchup can also be used to correct limey-hair-highlights-gone-green, which can sometimes occur from exposure to chlorine found in swimming pools (another good reason to check out natural pools as a refreshing alternative).

How? Restore your normal hair color -- or at least the one you paid dearly for -- by applying full strength ketchup to your hair. Smoosh it in, let it linger for about 20 minutes and then wash it out thoroughly.

Soothe wounds

Unused ketchup packets pile up across America by the millions, as hurried diners and service staff often grab huge handfuls, only to end up using a few. Lisa posted over on Seacoast Online that she freezes leftover ketchup and soy sauce packets to use on her children's "small booboos and bumps." She claims, "The kids LOVE them." Apparently even the mere appearance of the packets often makes their hurts go away.

I've been feeling a little under the weather this week. On top of that, works been hectic. Finally the weekened is here. After sleeping 12 hours last night, I decided to seize the day. Dick and I enjoyed lunch at Keifer's. After that, we had hoped to check out the crawfish festival at the Fairgrounds but the line was a mile long so we decided to skip that. After shopping at Miskelley's for a chair, I got a little side tracked and started looking at dining room sets. Thank goodness Dick was with me to keep me on track. Well, we ended up at IO Metro at Renaissance. Has anyone been there? I've heard about it but I don't ever make it out to Renaissance so it's always an after thought. I went today and we made an excellent purchase. While it wasn't a chair, we found the perfect "entry way" piece for the foyer. It was on sale too! I was pumped. Friday night, we had our parents over for a cookout. I wanted to share 3 recipes that are yummy! I made an asparaus casserole and potatoes au gratin casserole. My mom made a homemade oreo cookie pie. It was sinful!

Here are the recipes:

Asparagus Casserole
1 cup crushed Ritz crackers
2 cans cut green asparagus drained (or use fresh asparagus)
1 cup grated sharp cheese
1/4 cup butter, diced
1 cup almonds
1 cup milk

Line casserole with a few cracker crumbs. Alternate layers of asparagus, cheese, cracker crumbs, butter and almonds. Pour milk into one side of the dish. Prepare dish the night before or at least 2 hours in advance. Bake at 350degrees for 1 hour. Serves 6

Shredded Potato au Gratin
6 medium potatoes 1/3 cup chopped onion
2 cups, shredded Cheddar cheese 1 tsp salt
6 tbsp butter, divided 1/4 tsp pepper
2 cups sour cream

Boil Potatoes in skins. Chill, peel and shred. Stir in cheese and 4 tbsp melted butter. Fold in sour cream, onion, salt and pepper. Place in greased casserole. Bake at 350 for 30 min. Serves 6-8

Oreo cookie dessert
1 package of oreo cookies, divided, crushed (save 3/4 c)
1/2-1 cup butter or margarine, melted
16 ou of cool whip, divided
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 box instant chocolate pudding mix
2 cups milk
1 can Eagle Brand Condensed Milk

Pour crushed cookies in glass dish (9 x 13)
melt butter, pour over cookies
mix 1/2 of the cool whip, cream cheese and powdered sugar, spread on top
mix pudding with milk and eagle brand, beat until thick, spread on top
spread on other 8 oz
cool whip
sprinkle with left over cookies- refrigerate over night
ENJOY!

RIP Cute Platter and Blinds

Whew! What a week. Yesterday, I came home to greet my dog and notice that my curtains were sideweays. I walked over to pull the string to adjust and the string was broken. Lizzie chewed it up!! BAD DOG! We had to take the blinds down. No blinds in the kitchen now!

Remember the post I made about the "Tuesday Morning" find?? Well it shattered. It was on top of the refrigerator and I insisted it go there and Dick insisted it was going to fall. Well, Dick opened the freeze and I hear "CRASH!!!!!" My beautiful platter was shattered in a million pieces. Dick was right and I am out a cute platter. Bummer!

Susan Boyle & Spin Class

I bet you are wondering what they have in common. Well they actually have nothing in common except for the lessons I learned today. For those of you living under a rock (and that was me until today) Susan Boyle was on America's Got Talent. If you haven't heard her amazing voice yet, please stop reading this and go to youtube.com or google her name. Instantly you'll find a clip of her singing. I, like many people, were skeptic of her. She was awkward and goofy. I even felt sorry for her because you can hear the crowd laughing at her. Once she began singing, she put everyone in their place. It was awesome. It serves as a constant reminder to us all that we should not be so quick to judge others at first glance.

Now there's my spin class story. As I had promised myself, I committed to spin 3days a week. Today (Sunday) was my 3rd class. I was so proud of myself for dragging (I'm still in the dragging phase, because as much as I've tried to convince the hubby or others to attend, they've all passed!) to the class. It would serve as a great motivation if I had a partner but for now I'm self- motivating :). Let me preface my story with this quick one. I love my class during the week. The regulars all know each other and the instructor is awesome. They all know my name and there's one Indian guy who will randomly yell "YOU CAN DO IT SUSAAANNN!!!" I love it. So that's the other part of my motivation--if I'm not there, it's noted by someone!
So today I walk in and there's a new instructor. Taking the lesson I remembered a few hours earlier about Susan Boyle I didn't judge him because he didn't greet me or even when he ripped the clock off the wall and said, "This class is usually 45 minutes but today we may go an hour or over." He started out kicking our butts and when a girl next to me fixed her ponytail he let her know that "it wasn't time for fixing pony tails or resting" and "This is not a Sunday stroll, get movin!" I was moving alright. After 25 minutes of this, I walked out. I acutally learned several lessons here: not to take spin class on Sundays or anyday with Eric...but MOST importantly, I learned that I often do this with my students. As teachers we tend to get caught up in what a child cannot do rather than focus on what they can do and praise it. They need to know that the effort they are giving may be all they have and it should be good enough for now. Tomorrow's another day. Progress will be made. In the classroom, it cannot be made without the teacher who fails to recognize something positive in ALL students. If you are always expecting certain results and they fall short, the student will eventually give up because they will be tired of constantly trying to please you and earn your praise. They will feel like it's a battle they'll never win. So the other lesson for today is find something positive and praise them for it. It will make for happy students and teachers.

Yardwork

Dick and I mulched the front yard this weekend. It looks pretty good if I do say so myself. I spruced up the back porch and our rose bush is blooming finally. Our next project is adding gutters to our home. We've decided to save several thousands dollars and do this ourselves. It can't be that hard, right?? We shall see!

Dick turns the big 29 on Saturday, April 25th. In honor of that, I've rented a pontoon boat for us and 12 of his closest friends next Saturday. We are super excited! More pics to follow!!!

Spring is Here (or near)..

I don't think it's officially spring yet. However, Spring Break and warmer weather are all I need to kick off the season. I decorated my bulletin board (hopefully for the last time!!!) and decided it was too cute not to photograph. It may be hard to see but it says "Blooming in the fourth grade" and I took individual pictures of all my students and made them flowers. I thought for sure I'd have at least one boy moan and groan about being a flower but I was wrong. They love it!!! Only 5 weeks left to go!

Tuesday night Jenny, Dick, and I went to Trustmark Park to watch Ole Miss and MSU play baseball. We had a great time! Especially since the Rebels pulled off a huge win 8-1 !!! HOTTY TODDY!!!!!I was so glad to see Jenny. We were great friends in high school and have remained close throughout college. She lives in Atlanta now (and has for several years) but it doesn't mean we don't pick up where we left off!! Wish I had a picture of the two of us together. Sadly enough, it was a little chilly so remembering a blanket took precident over the camera.

Kidz in Memphis

I'm a little out of order with this post! However, While in Memphis I was able to visit with my good friend, Emory. She has a little girl (as many of you know) named Emma. I've attached several pictures (thanks Emory!) of us eating lunch at Huey's. She is such a good baby. Did I say baby? I think it's safe to say this little one is turning into a little girl. They grow up so fast :)

We also spent the weekend playing with Jase and Kaitlyn, Dick's cousin's kids. Wouldn't the kids Dick's 3rd cousins?? (Aunt Gusty, please clarify???) Anyways, they are so sweet and friendly. As soon as we walked in the door they made us feel welcome and we had a blast playing with them. I tried to get more pictures, but they were always on the move. They are precious! See for youseelf. Thanks Nick and Ashley for letting us stay with you all for the weekend. We hope to be there again soon!

Spin Class

When I lived in DC, my best buddy Kate and I were very good about going to spin class. We'd wake up really early and go to the 5am or 6am class. It was sooo hard to get up and go but after, you felt like a champ! It did wonders for me and I have decided it's time to take it back up. So I've made the commitment to spin class 3x a week. Today I will begin my first class. Wish me luck!! I'll need it. Kate, I wish you were here with me to do it!!!!!

Boys and Girls Club of Central MS

I really want one of these! Dick and I have a Family Plan with Cellular South. He does not use his phone anymore since work gave him one. I am considering making the switch but I am interested to hear what you all think of your IPhones??? Does it get good service? Does the battery hold up well? Are your monthly bills expensive? I swore off Cingular (AT&T) about 2 years ago because I just kept getting outrageous bills so I just want to know if you incur extra charges for internet usage, email pictures, etc. Help a friend out!

Memphis Trip

We had such a great time this weekend! We made a pit stop in Oxford to see the kids and deliver Easter baskets on Friday. A few hours later, we then continued north to Memphis to see Dick's cousins, aunt and uncle. Friday night we had dinner at a sushi restaurant called Wassabee. Here's a picture of us at dinner.

Afterwards, we headed to the Flying Saucer. I had to attached a picture of the beer. This was called "A Trip Around the World." I didn't partake in this but I couldn't resist photographing it because I thought it was fun.

Afterwards, we ended the night catching up and playing Guitar Hero.

What's Cookin?

Tonight (Sunday) I made lasagna. It was very yummy if I do say so myself. While I was engaged, I had a (very useful) kitchen shower. I was given a recipe book that I use often. This is one of the recipes given to me. I did vary it some to make it a little more healthy. I used nonfat cottage cheese and whole wheat lasagna noodles.

Ingredients:
8oz Lasagna noodles- uncooked
1 8oz cottage cheese
1 lb of lean ground beef
2 jars of spaghetti sauce
2 eggs
2 cups (8 oz) of Mozzeralla cheese

Directions: Brown beef, mix with both jars of spaghetti sauce, mix 2 eggs with cottage cheese, preheat over to 350, layer lasagna in a 9 x 13 (or bigger) baking dish
Layer as follows: sauce on bottom, noodles (3-4 on a row), cottage cheese mixture, sauce, sprinkle mozzerella (repeat with noodle layer until dish is 3 layers thick

Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour- uncover and bake another 15 minutes

Easter

This Easter we are going to spend the weekend with my husband's family in Memphis. I am very much looking forward to seeing them. It's been way to long. His aunt and uncle live there as well as his cousin Ashley. Dick and Ashley lived together in Memphis several years ago. While I know they've always been close, I think while they lived together they got closer. Since then, Ashley and her sweet husband Nick, have had 2 kids. We are looking forward to seeing everyone and playing with the kiddos. Memphis here we come!

Principal's Chair

To be chosen to sit in the Principal's Chair is quite an honor because these students are sent to the office for being good, not bad. The students gets their picture made calling their parents to tell them they have been sent to the office but not to worry because they have been GOOD! So far, I've been lucky enough to send 3 of my boys to the office. It's so funny because sometimes they aren't able to actually reach their parent so when they do call back, they are soo relieved to find out nothing bad happened!
